[Evangeline is easily found sitting at the bar - especially for someone like Max. After all, she's the only person there wearing a magical suit with power extracted from monsters, she sticks out if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.]

Not that she plans to offer her soul up-front - not least because it can hardly be worth as much as she's going to ask for -, but even so! Still, she takes heart. After all, he's Evangeline's friend (or more-than-friend)!]

Mister Davis? This is Frieda Reiss calling. Evangeline may or may not have told you that I'd be reaching out to you. She told me about her... exchange with you, and it made me wonder about a similar idea I had. Perhaps, we could discuss it at some point. I look forward to hearing back from you.

[When she hangs up, her heart is beating fast. Did she really just call a god's mailbox?! That aside, she feels guilty for only contacting him to ask for his help. Her situation feels so dismal that she's been shying away from staying in contact with anyone who learned too much about it... but she reassures herself with the reminder that he'll make sure to get something out of any deal they might strike, too.]

[Max knows thanks to just what he is. Deals with him hum a certain tune on the wind. Both literally and figuratively. It isn't long before Freida's phone rings. He could appear behind her but he figures he should call first. She sounded nervous, scared even.]

Hello Frieda Reiss. I would be glad to talk terms with you about a deal.

[He'll cut to the chase at first. On the phone she can hear subtle music like it's in the background.]

Would you prefer in person or over the phone? I can accommodate either, of course.

[After her talk with Evangeline, Rinku sounds uncharacteristically nervous but picks up the phone.]

[In exchange, Max gives Rinku a little plush of a cute chinchilla. He has on headphones and a backwards hat. He is so cute and when squeezed, he lets out a nice soft scent of cherry blossoms that relaxes any who smell it.

According to the tag on him, his name is Charlie the Chinchilla.]

[Max loves it. In exchange, Evangeline gets a shirt that says; "I got eaten by a fae and all I got was this stupid shirt."]

[You know how a promise to get back to someone is harder to fulfill the more time goes by? That's what Frieda's been experiencing. After she initially sought Max out for help, she first needed several more weeks to neatly compile all the information, gather any missing details, brainstorm potential roadblocks and solutions and, most importantly, practise her pitch!

But in the end, it was to no avail. Her fellow Eldians shot her suggestion down unanimously, and she doesn't think any of them even reached out to Max to form a first-hand opinion of him after her explanation of their plan resulted in open distrust. She needed another few weeks to both emotionally recover from the intense reaction and reorient herself - perhaps an excessive amount of time, but it was very hard for her to come to terms with, above all else, the apparent lack of importance the others seemed to place in finding a way of saving their people.

Now, she finally feels ready to call his number again, and in the back of her mind she wonders if he already knows how it went. After all, one doesn't need to be omniscient or otherwise superpowered to conclude that no news, in this case, meant no progress. When he picks up, her smiles makes it into her voice regardless.]

[Max has a feeling he understands how it went. Only one person from Frieda's world reached out to him and made their stance fairly clear. With no others seeking information, a greeting, or something else, they likely didn't need to try and force Max to step back. Well, except the one person who told him to stop talking to Fried at all and Max politely declined.

When the phone rings, he answers it with a smile. Like always.]

Frieda, my dear! I am well. A Happy New Year to you too. To what do I owe the pleasure?

[On Valentine's Day, Max receives a photo from a Memory Camera.

It's a picture of Esme and Max together, sitting on a park bench. They're cast in beautiful sunset hues, with flowers all around them. The two of them are holding hands, the both of them looking completely relaxed with Esme's head on Max's shoulder. A warm and peaceful scene.

The note says simply, "Happy birthday. -Evangeline"]

I have a question for you, when you have time. It might be a little more involved of a topic.

The long and short of it is, I'm doing a spectacularly shitty job as Cole's pillar. It's too much for me after centuries not being close to anyone, and I haven't been doing well at separating wanting to be with him from the feeling of obligation, even if he doesn't consider me to have one I still feel it.

I'm not sure what can be done about this, but if anyone can, I'm thinking it's you. And I'm pretty desperate at this point.

Also, before we get lost in the weeds, if there is something to be done about this, I'd prefer to tell Cole myself before anyone else does. He deserves to hear it from me. I doubt he'll be surprised, but even so.

There are a couple of things to be done about it, sure. If it helps you feel any better, if you've spent less time with Cole because of it, that would help shift the role of pillar from you over time.

And I totally get you wanting to tell Cole yourself. In fact, that would be part of getting you released from the role too.

[Rinku knew she'd have trouble with the other elements. If they worked the opposite direction, it would've been fine. Desire, hope, and joy came easily to her, she'd have air no problem. But no, Summers who max out their initial skill tree have to learn earth first, and Autumn's emotions feel more foreign to her than any country.

Mostly.

But now? Now when she's walked through hell and seen the cruelty the demons there visit upon anyone and everyone, prisoners, nobles, commoners, pirates, soldiers, whole settlements, rescue parties -- all of them made to suffer and twist and die, and then have the same demons laugh and mock their existence and keep their belongings as trophies? Now that her little sister's harbouring a dangerous vengeful fury with no target, and her older sister's pretending her own death is no big deal (and Rinku doesn't know the half of it)? Now that they went to end the danger, but they only managed it once that danger tricked the barrier and followed them home to the city? Now, the happiest person in Ellipsa is fighting to not feel sad -- sad and desperate and alone, even when she tries to put her smile back on.

So she goes out to train. Not in the Summer Guild like normal -- this time she's out in the Autumn Segment, by the side of the road, close to the city. Anyone passing to one of the quests or anywhere else can see her trying to concentrate and managing a skiff of dirt on the ground.]

[Max visit the Autumn Guild quite often. Especially for quests. He is on his way to check out the quest board again and decide what he wants to do. Though something more interesting catches his eye. Rinku is nearby, on the side of the road, trying to move earth, from the looks of it. And not doing too good a job at it either.

Though it is her song that eats up the majority of his attention span. The song is not nearly as bouncy as it usually is. It's like a slow reverbed version. Like when someone tries to remix a happy song to sound sad. He walks over to her and watches her next attempt before he says anything.]

You want any pointers on how to move rocks easier, Rinku-chan?

[It's Christmas Eve and Katsuki's out delivering all of his gifts. For Max, he drops off a bag with a couple of items inside.

One handmade box of chocolates, a leather jacket with Max's name on the back and a vampire's skull underneath (custom made!!), and a mug Katsuki thought was pretty cool for his fellow vampire older brother!!]
